We’ve taken a good look at the tools most men already have, the internal tools that make us successful as providers and protectors. Now let’s take a look at the tools we might need to add to our internal toolbox.

You may already have some of the relational tools we’ll talk about. Or you may already have all but one of the relational tools we’ll talk about in this chapter; but that one tool you add might take your relationships from mediocre to amazing.

For now, though, the bottom line is that you know there is something you need. And that reminds us of a story about John, a man we met at one of our seminars.

John lived by this simple adage: “Never go anywhere without your tools.” If the family was packing for a vacation, John was packing his tools. While the rest of the family bustled about the house finding suitcases and suntan lotion, John was in the garage.

“You aren’t bringing your tools again, are you?” his wife, Melinda, would ask, often while single-handedly packing clothes for each of their three children.

John would look more hurt than shocked at that question. It was truly inconceivable to him that his wife would question his need for tools on a vacation. “Of course,” he would answer. “I don’t go anywhere without my tools. You know that.”

“But, dear, we’re flying this time,” she observed before one vacation. “I don’t think you’ll need your tools in Florida.”

John had to brace himself against his upright tool chest to keep from falling over in disbelief. “That’s exactly why I need my tools,” he said. He locked eyes with hers, trying to connect at a new and deeper level than ever before. “The rental car certainly won’t have tools. What if something happens?”

“What if it’s too heavy to take on the plane?”

“I’m not taking the entire chest.” John discreetly pushed the chest back into its place against the garage wall. “I’m . . . I’m taking a smaller chest. It’ll be my carry-on bag.”
